I am old enough to remember a world of small pleasures that revolved around snailmail. Every day that the mails ran, I would check my mailbox to see if a letter arrived from someone I cared about. When a letter arrived, I would open it and be carried into the world of the person who had sent it.
The mail system was an opportunity for me to cultivate hope and joy.
I would like to regain that hope and joy for myself and for you. So I've started Prayer by Mail.
Before I explain what Prayer by Mail is, let me tell you what it is not.
- It is not an app.
- It does not collect any data or records of any kind.
- It does not charge or collect any money.
- It does not receive any emails, texts, DMs, or electronic messages of any kind.
- It takes no political positions.
So, what is Prayer by Mail? It's as simple as can be:
For readers outside the United States: At this time, Prayer by Mail is available only to US residents, because of postage limitations. (A SASE bearing stamps from outside the US won't work if mailed from Connecticut.) If there is sufficient interest, I will try to find a way of bringing it to other countries.
- Send a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope, pronounced SAY-zee) to the following address:

Milford, CT 06460 - Wait a short while. If I'm not traveling, the wait should be about one to two weeks.
- At the end of the wait, your SASE will show up in your mailbox. Open it carefully.
- Inside your SASE, you will find a piece of paper. On it will be a prayer that I have personally handwritten just for you.
- The prayer will most likely be from the writings of a saint, or from the liturgy, though it's possible I might come up with something from my own imagination. No matter where it comes from, its intent will be to help you draw your mind and heart to God.
- Try to see how long you can spend meditating on the handwritten prayer before you return to your smartphone, laptop, or whatever electronic device may have an inordinate hold on your attention.

No need to send a note, unless you want to tell me something to help me choose which prayer to handwrite. I normally assume that the prayers are requested by Catholics for themselves, but occasionally someone will request a prayer for someone else or will want a prayer that can be prayed by a person of a different faith. I'll handwrite a prayer for anyone who believes in God or who wants to believe.
